The energy sector at the start of 2025: The most important news from the first week

In the first week of 2025, the energy sector is marked by key events and controversies. The Slovak Prime Minister criticises Ukraine's actions, pointing to the consequences of halting gas transit. Meanwhile, the Czech Republic is outpacing Poland in energy transition, handling nuclear and coal better. Poland, however, is looking to the future, planning 4,700 km of new transmission lines, which will facilitate the development of nuclear energy. In the background, we are breaking records: 2024 has become the warmest year on record, exceeding the threshold of the Paris Agreement. Details in the article.

Fico claims that the halt in transit did not pose a threat to gas supplies for Slovak households, but only a loss of revenue from the transit of gas across Slovakia's territory further west into Europe.

Poland and the Czech Republic are countries that share many common features in the energy sector. However, Prague is carrying out its energy transition more quickly and efficiently than Warsaw. Why is that?

The implementation of the plan will allow, among other things, for the connection of Poland's first nuclear power plant in Pomerania to the power grid and the commissioning of SMRs.

According to preliminary data, the year 2024 was 1.6°C warmer than the pre-industrial era. This is the first year the warming threshold from the Paris Agreement has been exceeded.
