Energy industry at the start of 2025: The most important news from the first week

The first week of 2025 brings key events and controversies to the energy sector. The Slovak Prime Minister criticizes Ukraine's actions, pointing to the consequences of the gas transit suspension. Meanwhile, the Czech Republic is ahead of Poland in its energy transition, better managing nuclear and coal. Poland, however, is looking to the future, planning 4,700 km of new transmission lines, which will enable the development of nuclear energy. In the background, we are breaking records: 2024 was the warmest year on record, exceeding the Paris Agreement threshold. Details in the article.

Fico claims that the suspension of transit did not pose a threat to gas supplies to Slovak households, but only a loss of revenue from gas transmission through Slovakian territory further to western Europe.

Poland and the Czech Republic share many common characteristics in the energy sector. However, Prague is implementing its energy transition faster and more efficiently than Warsaw. Why?

The implementation of the plan will enable, among other things, the connection of Poland's first nuclear power plant in Pomerania to the power system and the commissioning of SMRs.

According to preliminary data, 2024 will be 1.6°C warmer than the pre-industrial era. This is the first year the warming threshold of the Paris Agreement has been exceeded.
